4 – 22 December 2018
The Vietnam and Thailand experience presents the opportunity for participants to experience the urban and rural cultures of each country.
We begin in Thailand, as participants work with the Indigenous Karen community in order to help contribute to improving the living conditions of this local hill tribe. We help with construction at the Xavier Learning Community as well as visit local Jesuit works in Chiang Mai. We will then transfer across to Vietnam via train and stay at St Vincent Diem Home for Children with a Disability, assisting the Sisters with a variety of activities and caring for the children. We will also visit the ice manufacturing social enterprise the sisters have founded.
“For me the highlight was during my experience at the orphanage in Vietnam. The particular moment that stood out for me was on the last night when the children at the orphanage had staged a concert for us, and then when we were performing they joined in with us. The dancing that followed was a really happy moment for me, especially when some of the kids I had formed special connections with wanted to sing and dance alongside me. Their smiles and excitement made me really happy and I think it was the simplicity of that happy moment that made it so memorable.”
